"New Pathways": Brno Graduate Conference in English Studies

The Department of English and American Studies at Masaryk University, Brno, is pleased to announce the Brno Graduate Conference in English Studies, to be held on NOVEMBER 18-19, 2024. This year's theme, "CULTURAL MEMORY: REMEMBERING THE FORGOTTEN" invites doctoral students to explore numerous ways in which literary, cultural, and linguistic practices contribute to the construction, preservation, and transformation of cultural memory.

We welcome papers in literature, cultural studies and linguistics that address the following topics, though submissions are not limited to these areas:

  • Landscape memory: Memory of place and the place of memory
  • Intergenerational transmission
  • Memory in identity and cultural formation
  • The past in contemporary narrative culture
  • Formation of traditions, stereotypes, and mental images
  • Adaptation and trans-medial studies
  • Intersections of memory and trauma in texts
  • The use of narrative techniques in the recovery of suppressed voices
  • Comparative studies of memory in different literary traditions
  • Memory and forgetting in digital and post-digital contexts
  • The impact of literary archives on cultural memory

We encourage interdisciplinary approaches and welcome contributions from related fields and disciplines.

Please, submit an abstract of 100-150 WORDS, to newpath2024@phil.muni.cz by 24. 10. 2024. If you have a day of preference for your presentation, do not hesitate to let us know at the end of your abstract. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by 31.10. 2024.
